St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a perennial flowering plant native to the Eurasian, South and North American, South African and Australian region. The reddish stems grow up to 1m high and the leaves are yellow-green. The plant is usually harvested during the summer solstice or around St John’s Feast Day on June 24th.

A carrier oil infused with St. John’s wort has often been used as a natural medicine for wounds and infections. Other uses in folk tradition include the treatment of mild to moderate depression and studies have proven its effect on improving mild anxiety, insomnia and depression. St John’s Wort is often added to menopause and/or hormonal imbalance supplements, as the plant interacts favorably with the hormones responsible for sleep, appetite and mood.

Hypericin, the active constituent of the plant, is believed to provide the medicinal benefits by inhibiting the action of the enzyme dopamine β-hydroxylase, thus leading to increased dopamine levels. The plant is also used for the treatment and relief of premenstrual syndrome, heart palpitations, muscle and nerve pain, fatigue and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). St. John’s Wort is beneficial when applied to the skin to treat wounds, burns and hemorrhoids, although caution is advised as it can cause sunlight sensitivity.

St John’s Wort can interact with other medications; therefore, it is always best to check with your doctor or healthcare provider before taking this supplement.
