Olive Leaf is known for its antioxidant properties and is a supplement traditionally used for supporting the immune system. The extract is an antiviral, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent and may also provide gastroprotective benefits. It helps maintain and overall sense of well-being, especially during the cold winter months.
Olive leaf is the leaf of the olive tree, measuring 4-10 centimetres and native to the Mediterranean region. The leaves have an astringent bitter taste and are packed with polyphenols. The olive branch is a symbol of victory in the Mediterranean region, mostly associated with ancient Greece but its origins are from Ancient Egypt. The olive branch appears in early Christian art, with the figure of a dove and represents peace.
Olive leaf has a long history of use in traditional and folk medicine. An extract from the leaves may help with various health conditions and ailments. Although more studies are needed, one human study suggests that it may help in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The leaves may also help with conditions such as high cholesterol, herpes, viral and bacterial infections, low immune response, inflammation, high blood pressure and more.
The leaves may help people that are in high risk of cardiovascular disease. One study found that men who took the extract for six weeks saw a drop in the blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol levels. The inflammatory markers were also reduced.
Another study suggests that the leaves may also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Adults who took the extract for 14 weeks had lower fasting blood glucose levels compared to the placebo group. This is possibly due to the fact that olive leaf extract may slow the digestion of starches therefore reducing the risk of glucose building up in the bloodstream.
